Europol says it has dismantled one of the most efficient cybercrime organizations, led by six Russians, two Ukrainians and two Georgians.

Headquartered in Spain, the cybercrime network had been extorting millions of euros from online users across Europe by persuading them to pay ‘police’ fines for visiting banned web sites. It locked a user’s computer, and sent a message in the form of a fake police warning, demanding 100 euros to unlock it.

The criminals earned $1.35 million annually.
