Spanish banks need 50 billion euros

Posted On Monday, February 28, 2011 0 comments

Spanish banks need 50 billion euros < Spanish news  "Credit rating agency Moody's put a 50-billion-euro ($69-billion) price tag Monday on the recapitalising of Spanish banks hit by the property market collapse.
And it said the level of banks' exposure to the real estate sector damages their creditworthiness.
The Moody's Investors Service estimate is far higher than the 20-billion-euro maximum that the government says would be required to rebuild banking balance sheets.
Spain's government this month approved stricter rules on the amount of rock-solid core capital that banks must hold on their balance sheets so as to shore up confidence in the battered economy.
Spain's savings banks are weighed down by loans that turned sour after the collapse of a housing bubble in 2008 and are at the heart of fears the country could need an Irish-style international rescue."

Spanish inflation hits 2-year high of 3.4%

Posted On Monday, February 28, 2011 0 comments

Spanish inflation hits 2-year high of 3.4%: "Spain's annual inflation rate surged to a two-year high of 3.4 per cent in February, grim news for an anaemic, jobs-scarce economy, preliminary data showed Monday.

Higher fuel, food and soft drink prices pushed inflation to its highest level since October 2008 when fuel prices were soaring, according to the National Statistics Institute estimate.

Inflation was at 3.0 per cent in January this year.

The Spanish economy slumped into recession during the second half of 2008 as the global financial meltdown compounded the collapse of the once-booming property market."

Expats in Spain 'sceptical' that properties will not be demolished

Posted On Thursday, February 24, 2011 0 comments

Expats in Spain 'sceptical' that properties will not be demolished : "The homes, the majority of which belong to British expats, were deemed illegal after being built on non-urban land in 2004.
Despite assurances from the town's mayor, Candido Trabalon, that the homes will not be demolished, residents remain sceptical and fear that regional government will override the decision made by the local council.
The homes, the majority of which belong to British expats, were deemed illegal in 2007 by the Andalucia regional government after being built on non-urban land from 2004.
According to regional government, the local council's proposed urbanisation of 358 hectares of land, on which many new expat developments had already been built, did not adhere to a planning legislation that came into effect in 2003.
Flanked by his legal team and facing 12 separate criminal proceedings for allegedly authorising the building of the illegal homes, the mayor explained at a meeting with residents that Zurgena council would grant provisional approval to its entire town plan in March with the intention of submitting it to the regional government."

Libyan uprising a 'foreign plot': Kadhafi son

Posted On Monday, February 21, 2011 0 comments

: Libyan uprising a 'foreign plot': Kadhafi son: "Saif al-Islam Kadhafi, the son of strongman Moamer Kadhafi, said Monday that Libya was on the verge of civil war and branded the unprecedented protests against his father's rule a foreign plot.
Blaming Arab and African expatriates of fomenting unrest in the country, he said the violence was aimed at installing Islamist rule, in a speech on television.
'At this moment there are tanks being driven by civilians in Benghazi,' Libya's second city and an epicentre of the unprecedented protests against Moamer Kadhafi's iron-fisted rule for nearly 42 years.
'We have arms, the military has arms and the forces which want to destroy Libya have arms,' he said.
Kadhafi, speaking in Arabic, also pledged a new constitution and new liberal laws saying the north African country was at a crossroads.
In the tough-talking, finger-wagging speech, Kadhafi's son blamed foreign media of inflating the death toll, which he repeatedly put at 84, and warned that any uprising would be ruthlessly suppressed."

Inspired by Egypt, thousands protest on Moroccan streets

A Moroccan Village Street Artists Photographic Poster Print, 18x24Inspired by Egypt, thousands protest on Moroccan streets - Africa, World - The Independent: "Thousands of people flooded on to the streets of cities across Morocco yesterday, hoping to wrest some powers from the ruling monarchy in the first large protests inspired by events in Tunisia and Egypt. At the front of the nearly thousand-strong crowd in Casablanca, excited youths held aloft a banner bearing the image of Mohammed Bouazizi, the Tunisian vegetable seller, whose self-immolation touched off the Arab revolt. They admired his sacrifice, but were revealingly modest in their demands. A larger demonstration took place in the capital Rabat, where some 5,000 protesters gathered opposite parliament. Smaller protests took place in Marrakech and Tangiers. The chants at times echoed those heard in Egypt's Tahrir Square, but differed crucially. 'The people want an end to corruption,' they chanted, wrapped in Moroccan flags, under the gentle drizzle that fell over Casablanca's Place Mohammed V. In Egypt, they wanted the end of the regime.

A source close to the England star said: “The investors are all just chasing their money at the moment."

Junta de Andalucía refuses calls for investigation into early retirement scandal

Posted On Sunday, February 20, 2011 0 comments

Regional Development Strategies of a New Regional Government: The Junta De Andalucia, 1984-1992 (Progress in Planning,)Junta de Andalucía refuses calls for investigation into early retirement scandal: "The Junta de Andalucía has ruled out any political resignations over the new scandal which is being referred to as EREgate. It’s an alleged fraud, investigations into which have found irregularities in 14 companies of the 39 where people have been paid early retirement payments when in fact they have never worked for the company concerned.

The Andalucia cabinet is blaming the General Director of Employment from 1999 to 2008, Javier Guerrero, for the irregularities, and he has already confessed to the judicial police, admitting that over those years he managed what he called ‘the reptile fund’.

However since that admission, Guerrero has withdrawn his statement. The case has put a question mark over the entire policy of help given to companies in the region since 1999, in which time over 647 million € of public money was spent. The case looks like fast becoming a national scandal, and three ministers have already had to face questions about it in Congress in Madrid."

Las Vegas Sands Starts Speaking Spanish (LVS, MGM, MPEL, WYNN)

Posted On Sunday, February 20, 2011 0 comments

Casino Slot Machines Room Roll 50ftLas Vegas Sands Starts Speaking Spanish (LVS, MGM, MPEL, WYNN): "Adelson is in discussions with Spanish governments to build a Las Vegas Strip style development that would cost somewhere around 10 billion to 15 billion euro ($13.6 billion to $20.4 billion). The development would follow Las Vegas Sands' business model of combining meeting, incentive, convention, and exhibition space (MICE) with a sprawling casino. So far that has worked in Las Vegas, Macau, and Singapore, but a move to Europe is the biggest gamble yet.

A move into Spain isn't the no-brainer that Las Vegas Sands' moves into Macau and Singapore were. Asian gamblers, and VIPs in particular, have an affinity for games of chance, and the close vicinity of billions of people didn't hurt the proposition. There was also help from Wynn Resorts (Nasdaq: WYNN), Melco Crown (Nasdaq: MPEL), and MGM Resorts (NYSE: MGM) building a critical mass in Macau.

Macau and Singapore also hold virtual monopolies on gaming in Asia, but Europe has a slew of competition a train ride away. Germany, Greece, Portugal, and of course Monaco all have casinos that provide competition to Spain.

Then there's the issue of cost versus the possible return on investment. The Spanish development would likely cost more than Las Vegas Sands has spent on the casinos it has opened in Macau and Singapore combined."

Sortu's predecessor Batasuna was banned in 2003 by Spanish courts.

Dirty War, Clean Hands: ETA, the GAL and Spanish Democracy, Second Edition (Yale Nota Bene)Eta has killed more than 800 people, many of them Spanish police officers, in fighting for an independent Basque state over the past four decades.

La Cocina Al DesnudoSanti Santamaria's last supper: pan tumaca - Telegraph: "The chef collapsed on Wednesday in the kitchen of Santi in Singapore, while giving Spanish food critics a tour of his newest restaurant.
He had just served up a plate of pan tumaca, the traditional appetizer of bread spread with olive oil, fresh tomato and shavings of Spanish ham.
He took a slice, and then invited the restaurant critic of Spanish news agency Efe to take a tour of the dining room with him.
'Everyone was delighted to be eating 'pan tumaca' with Santi in the kitchen,' said Cristino Alvarez, who had met the chef many times and considered him a friend. 'Santi asked me if I was familiar with the dining room, I told him no and we headed there.
'As we were coming out of the kitchen, he said to me: 'I'm taking a turn for the worse,' and he collapsed,' the food writer said."

Spain upset at Gibraltar 'bunkering'

Posted On Thursday, February 17, 2011 0 comments

Spain upset at Gibraltar 'bunkering': "The Spanish press is reporting ‘alarm’ in La Linea, following the announcement from Gibraltar that they are authorizing ‘bunkering’ by tankers in the Levante zone next to the Rock.

Bunkering is when a tanker transfers the contents of its tanks to another vessel while at sea. It seems the safety measures announced by Gibraltar have not impressed Spain.

The Partido Andalucista are among those to express their concerns for a situation which they admit ‘is not new’. They say that Gibraltar First Minister, Peter Caruana, has always said that bunkering can take place in the waters he considers to be Gibraltarian."

Gang shootout in Cartagena leaves two dead in street

Gang shootout in Cartagena leaves two dead in street: "shooting which occurred in the town of Cartagena (Murcia) early this morning between rival gangs has resulted, so far, in two dead, one wounded -very seriously shot in the head- and two detainees, Police sources have reported. Specialist police forces were forced to intervene and cordoned off the area.

Apparently, initial investigations suggest that the shooting could be due to the rivalry between two drug gangs, which forced the Special Operations Group of the National Police (GEO) to intervene.

Units of the National Police (GEO) counter-attacked early this morning the criminals who were shooting into the street from the second floor of a building located near the Sebastian Feringa and Alameda streets of San Anton in Cartagena."

EU's executive arm accused Spain of discriminating against foreign pensioners by not granting them equal access to free medication

Posted On Wednesday, February 16, 2011 0 comments

The European Commission took Spain to court Wednesday for refusing to grant pensioners from other EU countries who live temporarily in the country access to free medication.
European Union legislation gives pensioners who live temporarily in another EU country the same access to health care as retirees from their host country, if they present a European health insurance card.
The EU's executive arm accused Spain of discriminating against foreign pensioners by not granting them equal access to free medication, a right for retirees under Spanish law.
The commission decided to bring its case to the Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice, which could force Spain to modify its law.
"The Commission takes the view that Spanish rules are not in line with EU law as they discriminate against pensioners from other EU member states," the commission said in a statement.:Text may be subject to copyright. This blog does not claim copyright to any such text. Gas Scooter 50cc Moped Scooter on SaleIn Spain, 50cc Scooters Rain (Up 9.6%) | Motorcycle News: "Scooters larger than 125cc have become a nice solution for moving around modern Spanish cities and built-up areas, this is in spite of the negative sales figures that were recorded for this niche, and the sector in general, last year.

Although it has not escaped unscathed from the economic crisis scooters larger than 50cc became the first two-wheeled choice for the public in 2010, according to the report that was recently published by ANESDOR, Spain's motorbike and scooter manufacturers association.

As can be seen from the figures in the report, last year the scooter niche was the only one to grow overall (+9.6%), this is in stark contrast to the fall in sales of road and off-road bikes. The aggregate for last year was a total of 135,144 motorbikes of all types sold in Spain, compared to the 133,766 registered in 2009."

Doctors from Hell: The Horrific Account of Nazi Experiments on HumansAnother fake doctor discovered after working at two Alicante hospitals: "Another case of a fake doctor working at a hospital in the Valencia Region has been confirmed by the regional councillor for health, Manuel Cervera.

Speaking to journalists in the corridors of the Valencia parliament on Monday, he said the person concerned had no direct contact with patients at the hospital in Sant Joan D’Alacant, but may have taken part in a clinical session or posed as a doctor on call.

Juan José Vicedo from the Alicante Medical Association told Europa Press that the fake doctor passed herself off as an intern until a resident reported his suspicions to the Association. It was then discovered that she had posed as a medical student at Alicante Hospital, using the identity card of a genuine student and substituting her own photograph.

It’s understood that two other cases in the province, at health centres in Dénia and Elche, are now with the courts."

Worlds motorcycle press prepare for Ducati's Diavel | Clutch and Chrome: "Motorcycle journalists are being invited to Marbella Spain the take the latest motorcycle to roar into Ducati’s line-up, the Ducati Diavel, out onto the beautiful Spanish roads.

Reportedly, journalists from all over the world will be able to experience firsthand the new and powerful motorcycle from Italian powerhouse Ducati.

According to Ducati, the Diavel project was born when designers applied their wish-list of bike “basic instincts” to a blank canvas. With a “what if?” approach to creating a dream bike, they sketched inspiring shapes which became a lower and longer motorcycle.

“The challenge of building a muscular silhouette over a pure-bred competition motor had to be met with determination and a delicate touch, and the result is a frontal area that looks like a power athlete on the starting blocks,” explained the team at Ducati Design responsible for the project."

Santander hit by property market

Posted On Thursday, February 03, 2011 0 comments

Santander hit by property market: "Santander missed its original target to maintain annual profits largely because of bad loans in the Spanish property market, which more than offset improvements in Latin America and the UK.

The bank said net profit would have fallen just 3.2 per cent had it not been for the €472m net impact of a charge in the third quarter following demands for stricter real estate provisions by the Bank of Spain. Net interest income rose 11.1 per cent to €29.22bn.

Latin America accounted for 43 per cent of Santander’s net profits last year, with Brazil alone providing a quarter of group profit. Continental Europe was responsible for 35 per cent and Spanish commercial banking just 15 per cent."

Spain's most titled noble goes to Buckingham Palace

Spain's most titled noble goes to Buckingham Palace: "Spain’s most titled noble and, purportedly, the most titled woman in Europe and even the world, has travelled to the UK to attend a royal charity gala dinner at the invitation of the Prince of Wales.

The event is in aid of the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts and is being hosted by the Prince at Buckingham Palace. La Voz Libre reports that María del Rosario Cayetana Alfonsa Victoria Eugenia Francisca Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva, the XVIII Duchess of Alba, is accompanied on the trip by her son, Cayetano, who will be her dance partner at the gala.

She holds 46 noble titles and is 20 times a Grandee of Spain. It is said that she is able to cross the country from North to South without having to set foot on any land that is not her own.

It’s understood that Queen Elizabeth II will be at the gala, but there’s little known about the official protocol for the event, or whether the Queen will be bowing down to the most titled woman in Europe."

Miguel Carcaño still claims he has no idea where Marta's body was dumped

Miguel Carcaño still claims he has no idea where Marta's body was dumped: "The self-confessed killer of the 17 year old girl who disappeared in Seville two years ago, Marta del Castillo, has claimed that he has no idea where the teenager’s body is, blaming two of the others charged with her disappearance of dumping it.

Miguel Carcaño told a court in Seville that it was his friend, Samuel Benítez, and the juvenile known as El Cuco, Javier G.M., who disposed of Marta’s body. Carcaño said he stayed behind in the flat on Calle León XIII cleaning up the scene of the crime.

Sources quoted by Europa Press indicate that the accused confirmed his last version of the events to police, that he killed Marta by hitting her on the head with an ashtray, but did not rape her.

The EFE news agency indicates that he claimed to have invented the rape to avoid being tried by a jury. The Andalucía High Court of Justice recently decided that the trial would be taken by a panel of professional judges, which meant that part of the proceedings would have to be repeated. For that reason, the four adults charged in the case were brought before the instruction judge on Tuesday."

Spanish webpage reports Gibraltar claiming wider waters in the Strait

Spanish webpage reports Gibraltar claiming wider waters in the Strait: "Spanish website, ‘ElConfidencialDigital’ has claimed that the Gibraltar Government sent the European Union a letter last August in which a map showed that it considered practically all of the waters of the Strait where now Gibraltar waters.

The article claims the British Admiralty on the rock sent the letter to which there has been no institutional response from the Spanish Government.

The webpage quotes diplomatic sources saying that the Gibraltar Government had ordered a submarine search be carried out over last summer in waters not of its jurisdiction, and after seeing that no Spanish authority tried to impede such activities, then decided to declare the area as belonging to the Rock."
