Marbella City Council has launched a campaign to crackdown on illegal street traders that are said to be damaging the livelihoods of legitimate street traders and cluttering popular tourist coastal areas.

The city council is seeking the support of regional councils to help them to clean up the streets and clamp down on illegal traders. The council is said to have seized €600,000 worth of goods last year that were destined to be sold by unregistered street traders.

The mayor stated that his government team "maintains an attitude of zero tolerance to such situations, which are always increased in the summer.”

The council fears that the illegal traders are having a negative effect on the legitimate businesses operating in the Marbella and are selling below par goods to tourists. Many of the products on offer by illegal streets traders are said to be counterfeit so anyone buying from them does so that their own risk.

Marbella is the municipality with the greatest legal security of the coast

Posted On Friday, July 30, 2010 0 comments

Marbella is experiencing a renewal after its property scandals, according to the new urban planning and development squad in the province of Malaga. Law is king and so is a promise to make Marbella an economic magnet for all the right reasons.

KSD: Councillor, up to now, the Costa del Sol has been perceived in the United Kingdom as a paradise for the rich and, after the urban development scandals of recent years, a refuge for speculators. Recent administrative and judicial actions, however, have improved its image and showcase the region as attractive to residential and commercial investment. Can you offer some examples of how this is the case and what it offers British investors?

D. Pablo Moro: The renewal is due to the existence of a group of democratic governments, already belonging to an established party represented across Spain.
This group has favoured, together with the individual autonomous local governments, the approval of a new plan of urban development.
A development that bases its premise on a model city that gives priority to land use for sustainability, improved environmental conditions, transport and energy efficiency. There is also a focus on the adaption of buildings and services to that new city model.
But in order to complete a city with such high standards of excellence for a city that is the tourist capital of the Costa del Sol, the plan proposes a qualified improvement of existing urbanisations (residential building developments) and the installations and infrastructures demanded of tourism and hotels. On the other hand, the new general plan incorporates to the new building process that will work towards a better economic structure for the municipality, incorporating besides the traditional uses, activities related to new information and communication technologies.
Last, but not least, the new city plans a group of zones destined to lend services to the community in all areas: cultural, sanitary, sports, social, institutional, etc.
As a result, over the next eight years, Marbella will become the best place to live and in the best place to install profitable economic activity.

KSD: From Marbella’s City Hall, it has been said that the new General Plan for Urban Planning gives legal and urban security in order to attract capital and re-launch the city.
How can this regulation stop a repeat of the excesses of previous years, like building without licenses?
D. Pablo Moro: The new municipal corporation maintains a scrupulous compliance with the law.
United to having clearly defined urban development activities and final approval of the general plan with caution and control, it will be absolutely impossible to carry out construction activities outside the law.
These days, Marbella is the municipality with the greatest legal security of the coast because it has general planning approved and adapted to its urban and development legislation at the start of any project.

Spain’s inflation rate rose in July to the highest in almost two years as an increase in sales tax came into effect.

Posted On Friday, July 30, 2010 0 comments

Spain’s inflation rate rose in July to the highest in almost two years as an increase in sales tax came into effect.

Consumer prices based on a European Union measure rose 1.9 percent from a year earlier after a 1.5 percent increase in June, the Madrid-based National Statistics Institute said in a statement today. That is the fastest rate since November 2008. A Bloomberg News survey of 14 economists gave a median forecast of a 1.7 percent increase.

Spain, emerging from an almost two-year recession with the third-largest budget deficit in the euro region, has stepped up austerity measures in a move the government says may undermine the recovery. The main rate of value-added tax was increased to 18 percent from 16 percent on July 1, just as retailers were offering discounts of as much as 70 percent to attract shoppers to seasonal sales.

“Some price increases already happened in May and June but the largest bit will be in July,” said Giada Giani, an economist at Citigroup Global Markets in London. “Without the VAT hike, I’d expect inflation to remain very low.”

Deputy Finance Minister Carlos Ocana forecast in March that about 50 percent of the VAT increase would be passed on to consumers, with companies absorbing the rest. Inditex SA, the owner of Zara, said it wouldn’t pass on the increase.

Spain’s economy came out of the recession in the first quarter, even as unemployment rose to 20 percent. Investors’ concern about a deficit of 11.2 percent of gross domestic product last year led to a surge in Spain’s borrowing costs. The government responded by approving a 5 percent reduction in civil servants’ wages in May and was forced to cut its 2011 growth forecast to 1.3 percent from 1.8 percent as a result of the austerity measures.

Benalmadena, John O’Neill (40) died at about 3am local time from gunshot wounds

Posted On Friday, July 30, 2010 0 comments

John O’Neill (40) was described by his neighbours in Coolock as a lovely and decent person with no criminal background. Mr O’Neill, a plasterer, had travelled to Spain with his partner, three-year-old boy and nine-month-old girl.

He died at about 3am local time from gunshot wounds shortly after he was involved in an argument in Coco’s Bar in the holiday resort of Benalmadena.

Police were called to the bar after shots were fired by a man also believed to have been involved in the row. The man had been ejected by staff earlier and returned a short time later with a gun and opened fire, fatally wounding the Irishman.

Mr O’Neill’s partner was with him in the bar at the time the fight broke out, but was uninjured in the gun attack.

Mr O’Neill died minutes later on the footpath a short distance from the bar, which is one of the most popular local night spots for ex-pats and tourists.

Police in Benalmadena say they did not think the killing was related to a recent spate of gangland-style attacks in the area.

The initial indications were that Mr O’Neill died “as a result of a row that went too far” although “all lines of investigation were being pursued at present,” Chief Insp Pedro Parrilla said.

Spanish police investigating the fatal shooting have refused to confirm media reports that a British man had been taken in for questioning over the killing.

Mr O’Neill’s parents were said to be in a state of shock yesterday. Neighbours could be seen calling to Mr O’Neill’s parents’ home on Bunratty Drive in Coolock yesterday.

Mr O’Neill had moved around the corner from his parents to a house on Adare Road.

Neighbours said they were very sad to hear of the death of the man who was well-regarded locally.

He was “the best person I have known”, one of his next-door neighbours said.

The elderly woman described him as “a good friend”, who was “decent and respectable. We all loved him,” the woman, who was visibly upset, added.

A local man blessed himself as he drove by the red-brick house overlooking Stardust Memorial Park.

“You couldn’t meet a nicer fellow,” said neighbour Mick Malone, who had watched him grow up on the road. “He was never in trouble as far as I know,” Mr Malone added.

“He was a lovely person,” said Andrew Moffett, a childhood friend who grew up on the same road. “He was never involved in any trouble and was very harmless,” he said.

“He was a complete nice chap and was never involved in anything or in trouble with the police,” neighbour Jack Boyd said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is liaising with the Spanish authorities and is providing consular assistance to Mr O’Neill’s family.

It is also expected a postmortem examination on Mr O’Neill will be carried out in Spain.

Sir Alan Sugar is under investigation by a Marbella judge in connection with the allegedly fraudulent purchase of two buildings of the Byblos Hotel

Posted On Wednesday, July 28, 2010 0 comments

Sir Alan Sugar is under investigation by a Marbella judge in connection with the allegedly fraudulent purchase of two buildings of the Byblos Hotel in Mijas.

The hotel closed down at the end of May, but a year ago the British businessman was awarded the tennis club and the spa of the hotel complex at public auction for three million €.

Instruction Court 1 in Marbella has opened an investigation to see if there was fraud in Sugar’s bid, which was the only one presented to the auction, which had been deserted on three previous occasions.

El País reports that also implicated in the investigation is the lawyer, Luis Juega, from the Díaz-Bastein y Truan Abogados, who also represent Sean Connery, and who are also under investigation in the ‘Goldfinger’ case in which the Scottish actor is implicated.

The Byblos case come about following a legal complaint placed by a Belgian businessman which was also going to bid at the auction, and which had arranged finance and guarantees needed with the Bank of Scotland, the bank which the owners of the hotel, the Aifos group, used to purchase the hotel in 2006. Aifos lost ownership for failing to meet mortgage payments to the bank.

The Belgian businessman complains that the lawyer used privileged information from him to asses Sir Alan Sugar and to ensure that the Briton was successful. He claims the lawyer presented a series of obstacles to stop his appearance at the auction, even allegedly managing to influence the Bank of Scotland to withdraw their backing of the Belgian and to withdraw a previously arranged guarantee for eight million €.

It was the Bank of Scotland who told the Belgian what had happened, not thinking that his own lawyer would be acting against him, and that is where the alleged fraud lies.
El País says the lawyer, Luis Juega, faces charges of professional disloyalty, revealing of secrets, fraud and fraudulent administration.

There's an awful lot of rubbish out there that just won't sell at any price

Posted On Sunday, July 25, 2010 0 comments

"There's an awful lot of rubbish out there that just won't sell at any price," says Martin Dell of kyero.com, a website that lists 100,000 Spanish properties for sale by 1,500 estate agents. "There's huge developments on golf courses miles from anywhere, and bad-quality apartments in poor locations with no local amenities. When they talk about 40% or 50% discounts, even at that price they're not worth it."Torrevieja is the Spanish resort that exploded in size as Brits snapped up apartments and villas as frenetically as the developers knocked them out. But the town dubbed the Costa del Yorkshire is now better known to the Spanish banks as the home of the "British plumber mortgage", and knee-deep in negative equity as properties that once sold for €200,000 (£167,000) are now fetching as little as €60,000 (£50,000).

Don't expect a rebound in prices any time soon. The Costa Blanca was the most over-built region of Spain during the boom years, and a glut of property estimated to be as high as 1.2m units across the country will take many years to shift.

Desperate Spanish banks have started to offer 100% loans to anyone who will take distressed properties off their hands – and the buyers don't have to make a single repayment for three years. The 100% deals (on mortgages priced at about 3.5%) are for Spanish residents only, but they will give British buyers loans of up to 80%.

Andy Fox, who runs spanishbankproperty.com, acts as an agent for lender Bancaja and has access to 20,000 distressed and repossessed properties. He points to developments such as one in Adra near Almería, where prices on apartments that have never been occupied since being erected two years ago have plummeted from €150,000 to €74,040. And he is marketing a one-bed apartment repossessed by Banco Santander in a resort near Villamartin for €43,000 (£36,000).

But even he hesitates to describe prices as bargain-basement. "Please don't stick the word 'investment' on these properties. It's only a great time to buy if you are not interested in making money. Don't expect anything to jump in value, possibly for years."

British buyers, once the kings of the Costas, are now thin on the ground. During the boom, the British made up about 70% of the foreign purchasers along the Spanish coast, with stories of plumbers and taxi drivers buying three, four or five apartments at a time, often with large euro-based mortgages attached.

According to Mark Stucklin of SpanishPropertyInsight.com, the number of transactions has collapsed. One set of figures this week suggested that in the past six months only 500 homes have been bought by non-resident buyers across the whole of Spain. But Stucklin recommends taking such figures with a large pinch of salt. "There are few reliable statistics and indices. They are often based on asking prices which are vendor fantasies," he says.

The only figures that are reliable are those for transactions, which have fallen to 33,000 a month nationally, compared to 70,000 a month at the peak.

"The market has shrunk but it has stabilised," Stucklin says. "There is still a huge glut of unsold property that needs to be mopped up. The market is digesting the surplus stock in Madrid and Barcelona but elsewhere it will take a lot of time.

"We are seeing the Germans and the Nordics emerge as buyers in place of the Brits. The Germans withdrew during the boom, while the Brits paid top euro. Now the Germans are coming back," he says.

Official figures from the Spanish ministry of housing say prices have fallen nationally by only 11.2% since their peak. But indices from the two main domestic property websites, Idealista.com and fotocasa.es, suggest a fall of about 22%. "This seems to be a fair indication of reality," Dell says, but he adds that asking prices remain in many cases "bonkers".

Don't offer the asking price
Don't even consider putting in an offer on a Spanish property that isn't 25-30% below the asking price, Dell says. "There's some evidence that the decline in prices is tailing off, but we could see perhaps another 5%-10% off prices over the next year."

Rating agency Fitch forecasts that the Spanish property downturn will run until 2012, with prices falling 30% from their peak. In the boom, Spanish property prices across the country reached an average of 7.7 times local income – double the average between 1995 and 2000. That suggests that they may still have a long way to fall before they reach realistic levels.

"If you are looking for an investment, don't buy a Spanish property. But if you want to live in a hot country and are buying a property to occupy for many years, then it's an OK time to buy," says Dell.

Both Dell and Stucklin warn buyers to be cautious about the many websites now offering British buyers distressed and repossessed properties.

"Until very recently Spanish banks had to offer repossessions to the market at the initial valuation price. New legislation means that they have to write down values and take off some of the ludicrous valuations, but in truth they still remain overpriced and I expect many to eventually become social housing," says Dell.

The Costa Brava south of Alicante, which includes Torrevieja, has seen the broadest price declines but Dell says you have to head to the Costa Cálida in Murcia for the biggest price reductions.

Stucklin says prices remain firmest in upmarket resorts in the Balearic islands, Marbella and Sotogrande, where over-building was not on the scale of the Costa Blanca. He recommends a development in Sotogrande called Ribera del Marlin, marketed by Savills, where prices for two-bed luxury apartments have come down from about €595,000 (£497,000) to €410,000 (£342,000).

The lesson from the boom is an old one: location, location, location.

"Identify a desirable location where you really want to live. Make sure it has good views, and is not half an hour from a beach but more like five minutes, or that it's walking distance to the shops and restaurants," says Stucklin.

And don't rely on holiday rental income to cover the cost, says Fox. "During the boom the estate agents were telling people that the rental income would be fantastic. But with the fall in sterling the British just aren't coming in the same numbers.

"A lot of people bought off-plan in developments where they were promised a whole load of facilities, but they were never built," he adds. "It has been a nightmare for them."

British community is distressed because of the uncertainty about legal proceedings.

Posted On Saturday, July 24, 2010 0 comments

reports relate to summary procedures in the Investigative Court Number 1 in Huercal-Overa. The investigation centres on alleged planning crimes and alleged construction without a building license. It is feared that demolition will be requested when formal charges are made because this appears to be the usual practise of the Prosecutor. The homes affected are in the area of La Aljambra in the municipality of Albox. The investigation was initiated by Seprona in 2005. The case relates to several allegedly illegal urbanisation's which lack basic infrastructure. Many of the affected homeowners rely on generators to provide electricity.

The British community is distressed because of the uncertainty about legal proceedings. It is scandalous that things continue like this without the administration delivering a solution in spite of the promises offered. It is clear that the current solution will take many years and in the meantime the situation is getting worse rather than better.
AUAN recommends that anyone who thinks that they are affected by this case should take legal advice and appoint a lawyer and a procurator to defend their interests in these proceedings. Grouping together can reduce costs

Cristo de los Molinos complex uncertainty surrounding illegally built holiday homes in Marbella

Posted On Wednesday, July 21, 2010 0 comments

uncertainty surrounding illegally built holiday homes in Marbella is still ongoing despite promises from the Town Hall that buyers wouldn’t be punished for the wrong doing of others. However new fears have emerged about whether owners of illegal holiday villas will need to pay for the granting of a license to make their properties legal.

The new concerns have arisen after residents at the Cristo de los Molinos complex revealed they have been told they will need to pay to make their property legal.

The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, has previously stated that those who purchased property in good faith will not end up paying for the outrages of others. However owners are becoming increasingly frustrated as the saga continues to drag on without any guarantee of legalisation.

Marbella Town Hall are said to be planning a new procedure to reassure owners that there property is safe from demolition.

Air traffic controllers in France have gone on strike which is causing major disruption to European flights

Posted On Wednesday, July 21, 2010 0 comments

Air traffic controllers in France have gone on strike which is causing major disruption to European flights. The strike began late last night and is expected to go on until Thursday. Short and medium haul flights are worst affected with many carriers in the UK suffering severe delays and cancellations for flights routed either into France or through their airspace.

The strike is in protest of plans to merge the 4000 French controllers into a unified European wide system, which they believe will result in job losses.

Meanwhile, air traffic controllers at Barcelona’s El Prat airport have caused travel chaos in Southern Europe by holding a suspected ‘undercover’ strike with over a third of controllers phoning in ‘sick’ on Monday and Tuesday and failing to turn up for work.

Transport Minister Jose Blanco told Cadena Ser radio “In exceptional situations we will employ aerial military controllers to guarantee aviation traffic in our country,” the minister said. “We are obliged to take alternative measures.”

Blanco blamed the latest absenteeism on an “orchestrated campaign” and called for a full investigation into the fact that so many air traffic controllers had “fallen ill overnight”.

Controllers at El Prat airport have promised travellers a “complicated summer” in and out of Barcelona airspace as we reported on Monday.

Marbella: Spanish resort where Cheryl Cole and Kate Moss like to party | Mail Online: "Nikki Beach, the Costa del Sol's most manic cocktail bar in the richest, raunchiest, dodgiest and most hedonistic strip of sand in Spain: Marbella. Since the swinging Sixties when jet-set figures such as Jackie Onassis, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot would regularly be seen bopping in its discos and Rolling Stones Brian Jones and Mick Jagger sunned themselves on its beach, Marbella has resisted the urge to grow up and be serious. These days Cheryl Cole, Simon Cowell and Jemima Goldsmith all relax here while Kate Moss and Prince Harry love the party scene.
Sleeping in style: The Hotel Puente Romano in MarbellaThe first morning, I woke to the sun blazing through my window at the Hotel Puente Romano. A large breakfast of fruit, coffee and orange juice had been laid out on the terrace and as sipped strong coffee gazing out to sea, I already felt like a jet-setter. By late morning I was in town. Here, white Andalucian tapas bars nestle among High Street shops such as Mango and Zara, and cool, leafy squares contain urban-style bars. I had coffee and churros (Spanish doughnuts) at a bijou cafe on the Paseo Maritimo. The historic part of Marbella is partly surrounded by the ruins of an old Arab wall, There are churches and the well-known Orange Square, dating from 1485."

15-Year Old Girl Dies on Park Ride “El Pendulo” in Spain (VIDEO): "15-year-old girl has died on Tibidabo amusement park in Barcelona, Spain. She was riding a park attraction called “El Pendulo” when the handle of the ride broke off in midair. The accident also left two people injured who were hospitalized; a young boy also suffered injuries, but since they weren’t serious he wasn’t hospitalized.

Sara Jaurriete, director of the park explained the accident:
” the mechanical arm of El Pendulo (The Pendulum) broke and the basket carrying the teens fell on top of the ride known as “The Golden Mine.”
This park ride has been working without problems over the last 4 years, but I guess there is always a risk in them. Anyway, the park will have to deal with the responsibility on the death of such a young girl. I also imagine people will not be attending the park in fears of another accident.
Parks always need to have routine check-ups and maintenance of all the rides to avoid accidents like this one. Investigations are underway to determine if this accident was the result of negligence."

Spain has approximately 1 million Muslims. Burqas are rarely worn in the predominantly Catholic country

Posted On Tuesday, July 20, 2010 0 comments

Feminist Wire Daily Newsbriefs: U.S. and Global News Coverage: "Spain's lower house of parliament will debate a proposal that would ban burqas in public this week. The proposed ban is based on the argument that the burqa is demeaning to women. The legislation, which was introduced by Spain's leading opposition party, the Popular Party, is largely supported by the ruling Socialist Party, according to the Associated Press. The upper house of the Spanish parliament voted in June in favor of a motion that would ban the wearing of the burqa in public, according to the New York Times.

A vote on the potential ban is unlikely for several months. If a ban is enacted, it is possible that the countrys highest court would rule it unconstitutional, according to the Associated Press. Justice Minister Francisco Caamano is in favor of banning the garment, and he said the article is 'hardly compatible with human dignity.'

With a population of about 47 million, Spain has approximately 1 million Muslims. Burqas are rarely worn in the predominantly Catholic country.

Mansur Escudero, spokesman for Spain's Islamic Commission, said that although there is no religious mandate for women to wear the burqa, he feels government efforts to ban the garment restrict free choice, reported the Associated Press."

group of Argentine women wearing white kerchiefs with the names of their missing children flew to Madrid and entered the chambers of Baltasar Garzon

Posted On Saturday, July 17, 2010 0 comments

Fourteen years ago, a group of Argentine women wearing white kerchiefs with the names of their missing children flew to Madrid and entered the chambers of Spanish Judge Baltasar Garzon. He says they changed his life.
The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo were seeking justice for those who had disappeared during Argentina's bloody 1976-1983 military dictatorship. Though the crimes happened on the other side of the world nearly two decades earlier, Garzon couldn't turn them away.
"Judges, more than anyone, cannot look away. This is not some other people's problem. It is our problem. It is our responsibility," said Garzon, who now faces potentially career-ending charges of overstepping his authority by trying to investigate crimes against humanity in his own country.
Today, human rights trials are in full swing in Argentina and Chile, and many credit Garzon, who charged dozens of Argentine junta figures with crimes against humanity and issued an arrest warrant for Chilean dictator Gen. Augusto Pinochet.
Garzon, who also has taken on al-Qaida terrorists, came to Buenos Aires to be honored at Friday's commemorations of the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center that killed 85 people, and to join human rights leaders in another ceremony Thursday night inside the former Naval Mechanics School, which served as one of the most notorious torture and extermination centers during the dictatorship.

Portugal Telecom ended a board meeting late on Friday without reaching a decision on whether to accept Telefonica's 7.15 billion euros

Portugal Telecom ended a board meeting late on Friday without reaching a decision on whether to accept Telefonica's 7.15 billion euro ($9.2 billion) bid for its stake in Vivo. Telefonica first bid for the company in May.

But a late plea by PT to extend the deadline for negotiations from Friday to July 28 was rejected by Telefonica.

PT said in a fax, sent 21 minutes before the deadline expired at the end of the day, that talks had progressed with Telefonica in a constructive manner and it was committed to finding an agreement that satisfied all parties. The request was denied in a faxed response, and confirmed in a statement to the Spanish market regulator on Saturday.

"Telefonica announces that after Portugal Telecom's board did not accept the offer within the agreed time the offer has been dropped," Telefonica said.

Telefonica's deadline had already been extended once after the Portuguese government blocked the transaction two weeks ago by using its golden share in Portugal Telecom.

James Bond actor Sean Connery is being investigated for alleged tax fraud involving the sale of two large tracts of land in Spain.

Investigators say a property firm linked to the 79-year-old actor failed to pay taxes after he and his second wife sold land they owned on the outskirts of Malaga, Spain a UK paper reported Thursday.

The Daily Mail reported that the company, which also assisted in the sale of Connery's beachside mansion, Casa Malibu, in Marbella, Spain, failed to pay upwards of $2 million in taxes stemming from the sale of development rights to the land outside of Malaga.

They are also investigating the law firm, Diaz-Bastien & Truan, over the sale of Casa Malibu.

Spanish police raided the offices in Marbella and Madrid in May in a covert operation - cleverly referred to as Goldfinger - and seized 30,000 documents, reports the Daily Mail.

Despite the allegations, neither Connery nor his wife have been arrested or charged with any offense.

Greenpeace criticised Friday the rapid building over of the Spanish coast

Greenpeace criticised Friday the rapid building over of the Spanish coast, publishing pictures of former fishing villages swallowed up by urban encroachment.
Between 1987 and 2005, more than 50,000 hectares (123,550 acres) of natural coastline had been given over to urban or commercial use and this "destruction" was continuing at a pace of 7.7 hectares a day, it said in a new report.
Spain's economic crisis had seen no let up in the construction, Greenpeace Spain president Juan Lopez de Uralde said, adding: "The most serious is that this trend is continuing."
The report was accompanied by photographs of the "massive" urbanisation of areas like Marbella in the south and Benidorm in the east, and old black and white pictures of them as small fishing villages.
Greenpeace said this phenomenon was particularly noticable over the past decade in Andalucia in the south, Valencia in the east and in Cantabria in the north, and had seen areas once relatively far apart become joined together.
The future looked dark because coastal municipalities were still planning to build more housing, hotels and marinas, said Greenpeace, adding "the real luxury is not a five star hotel but an unspoilt beach."
The group also noted that the enormous El Algarrobico hotel built illegally in 2005 and 2006 in a protected park in Cabo de Gata in the south was still standing despite a legal order for its demolition.
Greenpeace demanded the application and reinforcement of laws protecting the Spanish coast, adding that its building over was leading to a serious degradation of the quality of the water in affected regions.

According to the councillor, there are some 3,000 bracelets available in Spain, and only 300 are being used. Agents from Seprona, the Guardia Civil Environment Protection Agency, and the Almería local police have captured a young ‘Macaca Silvanus’, more popularly known as a Gibraltar monkey.

The animal was found in the La Pipa area of Almería after a local resident alerted Seprona that it was on the loose. Local Police then established a watch until indeed the monkey was spotted, but found it was impossible to catch because it was so aggressive. They called in help from the municipal zoo and a tranquilising dart was successfully fired.

Following capture the Guardia Civil confirmed it was a male Gibraltar Monkey which they think must have been abandoned. The chances of the animal having made its own way from Gibraltar are considered minimal.

Benefit fraudster John Watkinson jailed after fiddling more than £118k | Mail Online: "offshore account in Jersey and villas in Spain and Turkey, the company director and his wife enjoyed a millionaire lifestyle. But for more than a decade Watkinson, 69, pleaded poverty and told officials he had just £20 to his name. John Watkinson and his wife in front of their yacht in Turkey. He claimed £118,000 in benefits while declaring he had just £20 in the bankOver a 13-year period he claimed almost £120,000 in housing and council tax benefit, income support and pension credits. Yesterday he was behind bars after being jailed for two years when his benefits scam was uncovered by investigators. Liverpool Crown Court heard Watkinson pretended he was out of work and needed benefits to pay for his rented accommodation. But in reality he had secretly set up a firm in Gibraltar to act as a front for all his dealings. And three upmarket homes for which he claimed rent were actually wholly-owned by his company, Brooklyn Holdings Ltd. Over the years Watkinson used this company to buy a series of top-of-the-range boats and luxury villas in Marbella and Turkey. He also splashed out on a £42,000 luxury yacht named Phil-A-Me after his 51-year-old wife Philamena.David McLachlan, prosecuting, told the court that Watkinson fraudulently claimed more than £118,000 in housing and council tax benefit, income support and pension credits between April 1995 and August 2008.During the fraud he claimed he lived in rented homes in the villages of Heswall, Noctorum, and Oxton in the Wirral, when he actually owned them all. All the properties were bought and then sold by Brooklyn Holdings Ltd which left him free to pocket the housing benefit. On one occasion Watkinson's company sold a property and made a £214,000 profit."

The Associated Press: Spain bulls gore 2 in scary run, 5 more injured

The Associated Press: Spain bulls gore 2 in scary run, 5 more injured: "Two people were gored Thursday during a tense and dangerous second running of the bulls at Spain's famed San Fermin fiesta, and at least five other people were hospitalized after falling or being trampled by the hulking beasts, officials said.
Thousands took part in the dash to keep ahead of six fighting bulls and six bell-tinkling steers tasked with keeping the beasts together along the 930-yard (850-meter) course from a holding pen to the northern town's bullring.
The run lasted just under four minutes and produced panic when some bulls separated from the pack. One stopped just before entering the bullring and paced in circles threateningly while staring at the runners.
Television images showed the first runner being gored in the chest and hurled like a rag doll to the cobblestones of one of the narrow streets where the bull run takes place in Pamplona's historical old quarter. He remained on the ground dazed until he was taken away by rescue workers.
One man sustained serious injuries after being gored in the thorax, while a second man was gored in the left leg but was in better condition, said Fernando Boneta, a doctor at Navarra"

The First Major Fire of This Summer - RTN The Favourite Free Newspaper For The Costa Blanca, Costa Calida & Costa del Sol: "FIRE in the Sierra de Mijas this week is the first to hit the Costa del Sol this summer, and due to the terrain, the regional fire fighting force (INFOCA) had to mobilize 160 people including the fire brigades of Mijas, Fuengirola and Coin to bring the fire under control.
Only a week after the official start of the summer, we are deep into the period of greatest risk of fire. The fire originated in residential buildings in the hamlet of Puerto Colorado on Monday afternoon (28th), due to the difficult access it took until Tuesday to extinguish the flames. INFOCA crews were working throughout the night after aerial crews were withdrawn at last light.
At the time of going to press, two fire brigade forensic teams were still working to try to clarify the cause of the first major fire of the summer, although the provincial delegate for the Environment, Remedios Martel, confirmed that 'it seems that it was intentional”. Early estimates indicate that the flames razed about seven hectares of scrub and bush, municipal officials said.
The families of five nearby homes were alerted to the possibility that they may have to be evacuated due to the danger, but ultimately that was not necessary. However, as a preventive measure, the A-387 between km 7 and 9, was cut off for a short time."

Spain closes her airspace to British military jets close to Gibraltar

Spain closes her airspace to British military jets close to Gibraltar: "Spain on Wednesday closed her airspace to British military jets in order to stop a training exercise close to Gibraltar, according to a British military spokesman.

El Mundo reports that six Tornado F3 planes were to take part in the exercise which eventually went ahead anyway as Morocco opened up her airspace for the jets.

The refusal from Madrid comes after several incidents between British and Spanish ships in the waters around the Rock over recent months.

The Spanish Foreign Ministry played down the decision, saying that Spain has never allowed British military planes to fly over its territory. The Ministry said that this is a ‘no news’, as it is part of the normal relations that Spain has with Britain in reference to Gibraltar."

Health care in Spain is not universal

Posted On Thursday, July 01, 2010 0 comments

Health care in Spain is not universal: "Although the article in El País does not mention it, the Governments report identified EU residents as one of groups currently excluded from the system. They are excluded on exactly the same basis as the other groups. Therefore the revised system should, in theory at least, offer access to public health care to everyone resident in Spain not just Spanish Nationals. This seems logical and fair since it is taxes of everyone living here, and not Social Contributions, which pay for the service."

Health care in Spain is not universal

Posted On Thursday, July 01, 2010 0 comments

Health care in Spain is not universal: "El País article notes that only 27% of Spaniards know they may not be covered, even if they pay all their taxes.

In theory all children and those who have no resources are always attended to, but there are four groups of people where people will be asked to put their hand in their pocket
- The unemployed who have exhausted their right to benefit, and who have some sort of income or savings
- Spaniards who have lived in countries which have no reciprocal health deal with Spain, and who have some sort of income or savings
- People who have never worked, and who have some sort of income or savings
- And independent workers who are members of professional colleges who are not integrated into the Spanish system for autonomos or the self-employed

The Ministry for Health estimates that between 90,000 and 180,000 residents are in this situation,"
